January – a time for new starts and new resolutions, but it’s also still (here in the U.K. at least) so very cold, so comfort is on the table too. With this juxtaposition, if you’re wondering what to eat in January, I have the answer for you here!
I like to eat somewhat ‘lighter’ in January. The multitude of treats of the festive season make way for vegetables and nutrients.
BUT I still very much want warmth and comfort from my food. I think there is nothing more necessary during the cold month of January, when the Christmas lights are gone and back to work/school has hit, than a groaning dinner table full of delicious things.
What to Eat in January – In Season
Although January tends to be a month of salads and lighter meals, the food in season is reminiscent of December. Rich, earthy vegetables reign!
These are some of the ingredients that are in season in January:
- Beetroot

- Parsnips
- Truffles
- Celery
- Brussels sprouts
- Turnips
- Kale
- Apples
- Rhubarb
