French toast doesn’t have to be drenched in syrup and covered in icing sugar. If you’re fed up of French toast that feels like a dessert, and want something a bit more grown up, this hot honey French toast is for you!
I love the way that French toast is so quick and easy to make. It’s a cooked breakfast without any unnecessary faff. And this version. – with hot honey – is absolutely delicious.
It uses just four ingredients – olive oil, bread, eggs and hot honey. It takes less than 10 minutes. It’s the perfect breakfast (it also makes an amazing quick supper – have a simple salad on the side if you feel the need for some veggies).
Ingredients, Substitutions and Variations
- Olive oil– to cook your French toast in. You could also use butter.
- Bread – I used sourdough for mine. I think sourdough is great for French toast because it has integrity- it holds its texture. However, you could use any sliced bread.
- Eggs – you want medium or large fresh eggs.
- Hot honey – any hot honey will be great, use your favourite one. If you don’t fancy spice, you could use a normal honey.
Top Tips
- Soak well
You want the bread to soak up as much of that beaten egg as possible, so use a large enough bowl to fit the bread in and press down to get plenty of egg on there.
- Don’t overcook
When the toast is golden on each side, it’s done. Don’t worry about leaving it to cook the egg in the middle – it will have plenty of time to cook through.
- Leftover egg
You may have leftover egg. If you do, you can save it in the fridge for the next day. Either make for French toast or fry it up into an omelette.
