I love a picnic. I really, really do. But I do not love a picnic that’s just…sandwiches.
You know the ones. Slightly soggy bread, fillings that stick to the roof of your mouth. No thank you.
If I’m going to the effort of packing up food, carrying it somewhere and sitting on the ground to eat it, I want food that’s actually worth it. Things that are easy to eat, hold up well, and feel a bit more exciting than a ham sandwich that’s been sweating in foil. And – absolutely key – I want my family to actually want to eat it too!
So this is a collection of my go-to savoury picnic food ideas without sandwiches – the things I actually make and pack when we’re heading out for the day.
There’s a strong pastry situation (obviously), a few things you can slice up and share, some protein-y bits that make it feel like a proper meal, and a handful of fresh sides to stop it all feeling a bit… beige.
Things You Can Eat With Your Hands (the best kind of picnic food)
If you only make one category from this list, make it this one.
These are the bits that get eaten first, require zero plates, and don’t involve balancing anything on your knee.

Smoked Cheese Sausage Rolls
A very strong picnic choice. Flaky pastry, savoury filling, and that extra hit of smoked cheese makes them feel a bit more special than your standard sausage roll.
Mini Beef Tartlets
Proper picnic food. Easy to hold, no mess, and filling enough that you’re not immediately rummaging for snacks again 10 minutes later.
Spinach and Brie Parcels
A slightly lighter option, but still wrapped in pastry (because we’re not monsters). The brie melts beautifully and the spinach keeps things from feeling too heavy.
Cheddar, Onion and Pea Puff Pastry Rolls
These are great when you want something vegetarian that still feels satisfying. Plenty of flavour, and they travel really well.

Things You Slice Up and Share
This is the bit where you bring something in a tin, cut it into pieces and feel like you’ve got your life together.

Spinach and Feta Filo Pie
Crispy, salty, savoury – and perfect for slicing up and passing around. It holds its shape well and tastes just as good cold.
Beetroot and Wensleydale Tartlets
A bit more colourful, a bit more interesting, and ideal if you want to bring something that looks like you’ve made an effort (even if it wasn’t that much effort).

Savoury Muffins & Scones (always a good idea)
I will always, always include something like this in a picnic.
They’re easy to grab, not messy, and tend to disappear very quickly. IF any were left over afterwards, they freeze really well too!

Savoury Scones with Feta
Classic for a reason. Soft, cheesy, and perfect eaten straight from the container with no fuss.
Cheddar and Chorizo Muffins
These are brilliant – a bit smoky, a bit rich and much more interesting than your standard picnic bake.
Picnic Bits That Aren’t Pastry
As much as I love a pastry-heavy situation, you do sometimes want something that isn’t 90% pastry.
These are the bits I bring to add a bit of variety.

Pesto Egg Bites
Perfect little grab-and-go bites. They’re easy to eat, hold their shape well and add a bit of protein to the mix.
Frittata Primavera
This is great cut into slices and packed up. It’s light but still filling, and works really well alongside all the richer pastry options.
(You could also swap this for a sausage and cheese frittata if you want something a bit heartier.)

Savoury Olive and Halloumi Loaf Cake
One of those things that feels a bit different but works so well. Slice it up, pack it up and it’s ready to go – no faff required.

Fresh Things to Balance It All Out
It is VERY easy to pack a picnic that’s basically just pastry. No judgement, I’ve done it MANY times.
But adding one or two fresh sides makes everything feel lighter, and stops you from hitting that ‘why do I feel like I’ve eaten 14 sausage rolls’ wall halfway through.

Cucumber Salad
Fresh, crunchy and slightly sharp, exactly what you want alongside richer picnic food.

Apple and Celery Slaw
Crisp, slightly sweet and full of texture. This adds a nice bit of contrast to all the softer, richer bits.

Sweetcorn and Black Bean Salad
This one’s a great all-rounder. It holds well, travels easily and adds a bit more substance to the picnic.

Pomegranate, Feta and Chickpea Salad
A bit brighter, a bit fresher, and perfect for balancing everything else out.

What to Take on a Picnic (Without Resorting to Sandwiches)
If you’re planning a picnic without sandwiches, the easiest way to think about it is to mix a few different types of food:
- something pastry-based (because obviously)
- something you can slice and share
- something a bit more filling or protein-heavy
- something fresh to balance it all out
That way you end up with a picnic that actually feels like a meal — not just a collection of beige snacks.
My Go-To Picnic Combo
If I’m packing a picnic for us, this is roughly what it looks like:
- smoked cheese sausage rolls
- spinach and feta filo pie
- cheddar and chorizo muffins
- pesto egg bites
- cucumber salad
It’s a mix of easy, filling and fresh – and most importantly, it’s all food that actually gets eaten.
