Poco – Chester (Where to Eat)

BEST. ROAST. EVER.

Seriously. I don’t throw those words around lightly.

Poco in Chester is a relaxed small plates restaurant and bar situated on Faulkner Street in Hoole. We started going when they first opened – we’d pop in part way through a weekend walk for a pint and some of their delectable tapas.

They have a display cabinet on entry to the bar which is always full of pinchos (essentially Spanish open sandwiches) and they’ll get your mouth watering. The flavours change extremely regularly but are always enticing – think chorizo, salami and manchego or Parma ham, Gorgonzola and honey. They’re the perfect snack to have with a drink and I always enjoy trying them.

Back to the roast.

Poco started serving Sunday roasts in December 2022 and we were lucky enough to get in there for one of the first ones.

The Sunday roasts are brought out on a sharing platter with all of the veg you’d expect. You can order sides to go with it (don’t sleep on the cauliflower cheese, it’s exceptional) too but there is plenty of food on the platter.

The food is as you would expect from a traditional roast, but there are often Spanish twists – I think there were chorizo pigs in blankets on the first one we had.

But, the reason we keep going back for more and the reason I rate it as the BEST. ROAST. EVER. – every single item on that platter is given so much love and attention. Roast potatoes? They’re crisp, golden and just perfect. Carrots? They’re sweet, delectable and just perfect. Gravy? It’s rich, warming and just perfect. You get my drift. There are many other places that do roasts that are great, but they’re not perfect. Poco’s roast is perfect.

I only have one photo of said roasts to share with you, because the only thing you want to do when it arrives in front of you is dive right in, but I’ll let it do the talking.

Poco only accept bookings on a Sunday and it is recommended to book because those roasts fly out of the door. You can book by popping them a message on their Instagram here.
