Easy Valentine’s Day Heart Shaped Biscuits

These cute, individually decorated heart shaped biscuits are the perfect homemade gift for your loved one on Valentine’s Day.

These little biscuits are a simple shortbread, which makes them the perfect vehicle for a selection of tasty toppings.

I top my heart shaped cookies with edible balls, hundreds and thousands, mini marshmallows and pomegranate seeds – but the joy of this recipe is that you can get really creative! Just stick to the pink theme and you’ll be golden!

These biscuits are simple enough to make with young children – my toddler helped me to make the ones photographed here – so get the whole family involved in your Valentine’s Day treat!

Valentines Day Biscuits – The Ingredients

  • Butter, plain flour, caster sugar – these are the ingredients that you will use to make your shortbread biscuits. The ingredients are rubbed together to form breadcrumbs, then pressed into a dough.
  • Icing sugar – icing sugar and water are used to make a simple icing to spoon onto the cooled biscuits. You will then be able to stick your toppings to this.
  • Edible balls, hundreds and thousands, mini marshmallows, pomegranate seeds – these are the toppings I used. If you choose to get creative with some different toppings, stick to either sugar toppings or fruits – berries (e.g. strawberries, cranberries or blueberries) work well, but make sure you slice them up if they are large.

Making the Biscuits – Top Tips

  1. Try not to overwork the dough. When you press the dough together, it’ll be very crumbly at first – this is normal and fine. Continue to press it together until it just forms a ball, but no more than this. Working your dough minimally will make sure that you end up with beautiful crumbly biscuits.
  2. Keep an eye on the biscuits when you’re baking them. You can easily burn them! You just want the lightest golden brown colour on them.
  3. For these heart shaped biscuits, use a 6cm cookie cutter like this one.
  4. You can make these biscuits in advance. Leave to cool fully (and allow the icing to completely set), then store in an airtight box in a cool place for 1-2 weeks.

Ingredients

  • 100 grams butter
  • 150 grams plain flour
  • 50 grams caster sugar
  • 50 grams icing sugar
  • 4 teaspoons mini marshmallows
  • 4 teaspoons pomegranate seeds
  • 4 teaspoons hundreds and thousands
  • 4 teaspoons white edible balls
  • 4 teaspoons silver edible balls

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.
  • Cube the butter and tip into a large bowl with the flour and caster sugar. Rub the mixture between your fingertips until it resembles small breadcrumbs.
  • Squeeze the mixture together to form a dough, then tip onto a lightly floured surface. Roll out to 0.5cm thick. Use a heart shaped biscuit cutter to cut the dough into 20 hearts – place the hearts onto a baking tray. Re-roll the dough as many times as you need to in order to use it all.
  • Place the baking tray into the oven for 10 minutes until the biscuits are firm and lightly golden. Remove from the oven and leave to cool fully.
  • Mix the icing sugar with 50ml cold water. Stir to create a smooth icing. Spoon the icing onto each biscuit and smooth with a knife.
  • Use one teaspoon of each of the toppings to top a biscuit – e.g. 4 biscuits will be topped with marshmallows, 4 will be topped with pomegranate seeds. Continue until all of the toppings have been used. Leave until the icing has set before eating.
